What were your first impressions?
“It was great to see how much energy sector offered for learning. This line of business is in a constant change with all its new trends and products. Currently, the introduction of remote-readable electricity meters is changing the market. The pace at which households are installing solar panels and automation related to energy systems is already staggering. Working together with customers makes the world of energy a part of daily life: our line of business is tangible and impacts the everyday life of the customer.”
What fascinates you particularly in energy issues?
“Positive customer experiences. People are often surprised at how much we can do to help them find the best energy solution. Learning new things continuously motivates me in my work. It is important to share ideas with others to get new perspectives and not to get stuck in the same old rut. We work with big questions and no-one can carry it all on their own shoulders. When everyone understands their own role and does their own part, then the pieces fall into place and the goal is reached. This is cooperation at its best!”
How an individual employee can experience importance when working in a large organization?
“The common goal is a satisfied customer and it takes all of us forward. Everyone has their own point of view on how to best achieve the greatest results. Put some of your own personality into what you do and this in fact makes work more meaningful. At the same time, it is important to work in accordance with our common values, so we can genuinely represent Fortum in the eyes of the customer. It requires knowledge of our procedures, whilst being able to act and adapt to each situation as necessary and consequently make a real difference with your own work.”
How to achieve good results?
“We have really top-notch experts who are able to work well independently. At the same time, our culture supports cooperation, also across business units. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, there always has to be time for people. When you invest in dialogue, it creates a genuine and credible sense of 'we're all in it together'. When there is trust, you can also challenge others and work together creating the best possible option. And you don't have to be scared of failures – indeed they are an indispensable part of the process if you want to achieve something new.”
What things in management are foremost for you?
“Trust is the most important - that we are honest and open with each other. Then our customers can also rely on us. It is important to be genuinely interested in people, and not just in what they do at work . This way everyone can feel genuinely appreciated. As a supervisor, I want to make it crystal clear what is it that we work for and why. The guiding principle in all actions is a satisfied customer. It directs my own and the whole team's work . And we do not take the easiest way out when achieving goals. As we overcome huge hurdle, we create something that will help us to stand out.”
