Dams are ranked into three categories based on the severity of the consequences of the dam’s failure. About fifty of our more than 400 dams are in the highest category. Most of them have been designed to withstand a flood that statistically occurs every 700 to 5,000 years.
Our long-term refurbishment programme targets increased safety, productivity, energy efficiency, and good availability of the hydropower plants. Continuous improvement of dam safety is an integral part of the refurbishment projects, and the condition of the dams is monitored through regular inspections.
We annually invest tens of millions of euros in dam safety.
In Finland, regulatory oversight of dam safety issues, excluding rescue operations, is the responsibility of regional Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres).
