In Finland, the use of nuclear power is subject to licence. The systems and policies related to the generation of nuclear energy are also controlled and approved by the authorities. The final permission for building additional nuclear power in Finland can be granted by the parliament after a decision in principle by the Government. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy has the task of governing the use of nuclear energy and preparing the legislation related to it.
According to Finnish law, the party granted permission to use nuclear energy must also ensure its safety. The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland is the authority that governs the safety of nuclear energy.
Nuclear power is based on multiple isolation and parallel safety measures. Systematic maintenance and modernisation as well as personnel training guarantee operation in line with current standards.
