Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant

Treatment since 1991

Until the end of 2009 totally about 1310 m³ of evaporator concentrates were purified. The evaporation concentrates included 200-300 g/l of total salt (about 50 g/l of sodium and 5 g/l of potassium) and 300 kBq/l caesium. The purification resulted in 1310 m³ of releasable liquid and 0.232 m³ of waste. In 2010 a new purification campaign started, where additionally over 200 m³ will be treated. Until the end of 2009 total cost savings compared to cementation was over 50 million euros.

Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI)

Treatment during 1997-1998

70 m³ of waste including 7 GBq/l of strontium and 7 GBq/l of caesium was purified to lower activity level enabling thus cheaper further treatments. The cost saving was more than 70 million euros compared to theoretical cost of vitrification.

Transportable Nures

Assignments during 1995-1996

Nures was installed inside a container to make the system transportable. One very successful example of the use of the container was the cleaning of 760 m³ liquid waste (50 kBq/l of caesium) in Paldiski Naval Base (Former Soviet Naval Training Center). The operation resulted in 760 m³ released clean water and only 12 liters of waste for final disposal.

Callaway Nuclear Power Plant

Treatment project 1996-1999

3000 m³ floor drain waste liquid with 2000 Bq/l caesium was cleaned. 3000 m³ pure water was generated for release and only 0,3 m³ of waste remained for final disposal. The cost savings compared to evaporation was up to 10 million euros.
