An energy efficient power plant saves money and the environment
The financial result of a power plant is directly related to its performance. When better performance is the goal, the energy efficiency of the plant and the availability must be scrutinised.
Energy production costs can be reduced significantly by improving the performance or energy efficiency, of the power plant. This has a direct impact on the biggest cost item of production, i.e. the fuel, which accounts for about half of the production costs.
Better power plant efficiency reduces the consumption of fuel, which in turn reduces emissions, so savings are also achieved in the cost of emissions allowances. At the same time, the environment benefits.
Improving fuel efficiency by 0.5 percentage points, for example, generates a total savings of up to half million euros in a 150-megawatt power plant. Additionally, this kind of efficiency improvement would also result in an annual reduction of over 4,000 tonnes in CO2 emissions if the plant is fuelled by coal or peat.

Fortum Ecotuning® is a year-long project to determine the weak links in a power plant's operational economy. The solution encompasses optimisation of the power plant’s processes and training of the personnel. We optimise the energy efficiency of the customer’s power plant and we guarantee that the power plant's energy efficiency will achieve a savings or revenue gain of at least 500,000 euros during the one-year review period.
