We also want to contribute to a carbon dioxide-free society by offering energy products and services that mitigate climate change also in other sectors of society.
Mitigating climate change is at the core of Fortum’s strategy. To achieve our long-term aspiration, we work systematically to reduce emissions from our own energy production.
Emissions trading and the utilisation of the Kyoto mechanisms are also important tools for Fortum in mitigating climate change. Along with 60 other companies, in 2009 we signed a declaration stating the European electricity industry’s objective of carbon-neutral energy production by 2050.
We are advancing toward the vision via intermediate targets. Fortum's goals for the next five years, as five-year averages, are:
Specific CO2 emissions from power generation in the EU area: < 80 g/kWh
Specific CO2 emissions from total energy production < 200 g/kWh
Energy efficiency: total efficiency of combustion: energy production divided by the primary energy of fuel input > 70%
Along with the emissions reduction measures implemented at production plants, Fortum has worked to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions, or carbon footprint, of its business travel and business properties since 2007. The actions include e.g. the continued reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from air travel and compensation of CO2 emissions from company-related air travel.
