Sustainability at the core of the strategy

Sustainability at the core of the strategy

Our purpose is to create energy that improves life for present and future generations. Sustainable solutions are the centrepiece of our strategy.

The foundation of Fortum’s updated strategy is the company’s strong knowhow in CO2-free hydro and nuclear power production, in natural resource-efficient combined heat and power production (CHP), and in operating in competitive energy markets. In line with the strategy, our future growth is based mainly on targets aligned with sustainable development: CO2-free production, energy efficiency and efficient use of resources.

Climate change mitigation important part of strategy

In the area of environmental responsibility, our know-how in CO2-free hydro and nuclear power production and in energy-efficient combined heat and power production is emphasised. Our long-term aspiration is to be a CO2-free power and heat company. Already now 85% of our electricity production in Europe is CO2-free. The specific CO2 emissions of European electricity producers were on average 337 g/kWh in 2010. Fortum’s specific CO2 emissions from electricity production were 88 g/kWh in Europe and 192 g/kWh for all of Fortum, including the Russian operations. In terms of our specific CO2 emissions we are among the best companies in Europe.

Fortum’s know-how in combined heat and power (CHP) production ranks at the top. CHP production is energy efficient and achieves an overall efficiency of up to 90%. CHP accounted for 29% of Fortum’s total electricity production in 2011 and about 71% of heat production. We have implemented our Russian investment programme with determination, and we’ve developed the production structure of the heat business in order to sharpen our focus on energy-and resource-efficient CHP production. In 2011 Fortum commenced the first phase of the integrated district heating project, Chelyabinsk Heat Ring to improve energy efficiency. The project aim at reducing energy losses in the area and increase the efficiency of heat supply by some 30 %

High level safety performance

In the area of social responsibility, our innovations and the security of supply of low-carbon power and heat enable social development and increase well-being. Taking care of the employees is also a priority for Fortum. We believe that good leadership is fundamental to employee well-being, commitment and performance and to ensuring the achievement of the company’s strategic goals. Fortum’s target is to ensure a safe work place for employees and service providers. In 2011 we achieved our all-time best safety level of lost workday injury frequency (LWIF) 1.6.

Strong commitment to performance

In terms of economic responsibility, we believe that competitiveness, performance excellence and market-driven production will create long-term value and growth. We aim for performance excellence and continuous improvement in our operations. In 2011, Fortum continued the Leading Performance and Growth (LPG) initiative, which aims to improve the company's performance and growth by increasing employees' involvement in implementing the strategy, by developing business planning and by strengthening leadership and organisational culture.

We want to be the benchmark company for all our stakeholders and to develop Fortum to the benefit of our shareholders, customers, partners and our personnel.
