Annual outages

Once a year, the reactors of Loviisa nuclear power plant will be shut down for annual maintenance outages. Planning for annual outages starts years in advance.
In 2024, the annual outage for Unit 2 is from August 4th to August 25th  and Unit 1, from August 31st to September 30th.

General information on annual outages

During each annual outages, the fuel is changed, i.e. recharged. At any one time, approximately a quarter of the fuel filler is changed. Every eight years, an extensive annual maintenance is carried out to inspect the pressure vessel and its internal parts, which slightly increases the duration of the annual maintenance and carries out the most challenging modifications, repairs and inspections.

During the annual outages, the plant employs, in addition to its own staff, around 700-1 000 external contractors from around 100 different companies.

Each annual outages has a separate safety theme and a high level of attention is paid to safety at work. Human factors and clear communication are at the heart of all work. Safety at work focuses on lifting and transfer work, as well as work involving a risk of falling.
