​Technologies suitable for incinerating waste include grate boilers, fluidised bed combustion and gasfication. Grate boilers and fluidised bed units are the two most widely used. Grate boilers suit better to unsorted waste and fluidised bed units suite for homogenous waste.

Grate boilers don´t require waste to be pre-processed. The technology is more expensive and an efficiency of 85 % can be achieved. Wood-based fuel can be used with grate boilers.

Fluidised bed boilers are common for power plants based on firing on peat and biomass, but not widely used in waste-to-energy applications. They offer somewhat higher efficiency, but waste must be pre-treated and operational experience is limited.

Gasification-based technology suitable for waste-to-energy production is still under development. Operational experience from this technology is limited.
