Unit 1 of Fortum’s Loviisa NPP shut down for fixing a valve seal

Unit 1 of Loviisa power plant was shut down on Friday 27 December at 3 a.m. due to a leakage in the inner gasket of an emergency cooling system valve. Repair work will take until noon and the unit will be returned into normal production by Friday evening.

The leakage in the inner gasket was spotted on Thursday 26 December. The outer gasket is fine, and the leakage is conducted to the water handling system along the leakage line according to plan.

The function of the emergency cooling system is to supply borated extra water to the reactor in case of an accident.

The gasket leakage does not endanger people, environment or the plant. During the shutdown of Loviisa 1, Loviisa 2 remains in normal production.
