Fortum to refurbish Höljes dam in Sweden

PRESS RELEASE, 22 May 2012

Fortum will refurbish the Höljes dam in the northwest part of Värmland in Sweden. The value of the refurbishment is about 50 million euros over a four-year period.

The Höljes refurbishment is being made to meet the latest requirements for dam safety. The project covers a new spillway gate and widening of the spillway chute. The refurbishment also includes strengthening of the dam’s protection against erosion.

The dam safety works will start in early summer 2012 and the work will be finalized during 2015. During the refurbishment period, the main contractor (NCC Construction) will have some 80 people working at the site.

The hydropower plant at Höljes has two turbines with a total output of 130 MW and an annual production of 530 GWh. The head is 88 meters. The Höljes dam was built in 1961. Refurbishment is estimated to have no significant effect on production at the Höljes power plant.

The Höljes project is part of Fortum’s annual hydropower investment programme of about 100 million euros. Its goal is to increase carbon dioxide-free hydropower production capacity, improve safety and secure good availability. Fortum has about 4,700 megawatts of hydropower capacity in the Nordic countries.
