The demand for recycled battery materials is expected to increase dramatically over the next five to ten years as the green energy transition speeds up. At the same time, the new EU regulation requires battery and automotive manufacturers to increase the amount of recycled materials in batteries. We at Fortum Battery Recycling are up to this challenge and closing the loop for valuable battery metals.

New state of the art facility recovers up to 95 % of the valuable metals

We have opened the first commer­cially operating facility recycling battery black mass in Europe. The facility is located in Harjavalta, Finland. Thanks to our cutting-edge hydromet­al­lur­gical technology, 95% of the valuable metals from a battery's black mass can be recovered for reuse. We aim towards nothing – zero amount of non-recyclable waste.
