Towards nothing – maximum recycling of valuable battery metals

The demand for recycled battery materials is expected to increase dramatically over the next five to ten years as the green energy transition speeds up. At the same time, the new EU regulation requires battery and automotive manufacturers to increase the amount of recycled materials in batteries. We at Fortum Battery Recycling are up to this challenge and closing the loop for valuable battery metals.

New state of the art facility recovers up to 95 % of the valuable metals

We have opened the first commercially operating facility recycling battery black mass in Europe. The facility is located in Harjavalta, Finland. Thanks to our cutting-edge hydrometallurgical technology, 95% of the valuable metals from a battery's black mass can be recovered for reuse. We aim towards nothing – zero amount of non-recyclable waste.

Closing the loop of battery materials in Europe

  • Hydrometallurgical recycling

Europe’s largest closed-loop hydrometallurgical battery recycling facility located in Harjavalta, Finland.

  • Mechanical recycling & dismantling

End-of-life lithium-ion batteries are dismantled and mechanically recycled in Kirchardt, Germany and in Ikaalinen, Finland.

  • Collection network

European-wide collection & hub network with DHL supply chain. Transport & storages permitted for battery waste.
