Meri-Pori power plant

The Meri-Pori coal power plant in Finland is located at Tahkoluoto in Pori. It was commissioned in 1994.

Meri-Pori power plant

The Meri-Pori power plant was commissioned in 1994 and is currently Finland’s only coal-fired condensing plant. From 2017-2022, the plant was part of the peak-load reserve system in Finland.

Meri-Pori power plant production reserved for emergency situations

On 30 October 2023 we announced the agreement between Fortum and the National Emergency Supply Agency, Huoltovarmuuskeskus (NESA) on reserving the production of the Meri-Pori coal condensing power plant for severe disruptions and emergencies to guarantee security of supply in the electricity system in Finland. The agreement period is 1 March 2024 until 31 December 2026. Reserving the possibility for production is a typical measure taken by the National Emergency Supply Agency to ensure the security of supply.

Fortum and coal

Efforts to reduce the use of coal have been underway for years, and its use in Finland will end in 2029. An accelerated phase-out of coal-fired generation is also a strategic target for Fortum. This has naturally influenced the company’s decisions to make the modernisations needed for commercial use of the Meri-Pori plant.
