Building expertise through small-scale hydrogen projects

13 October 2025

Hydrogen is no longer just a vision of the future – step by step it is becoming an enabler of Europe’s clean energy transition. As industries, transport, and energy systems seek carbon-neutral solutions and security of supply, hydrogen offers a versatile pathway to reduce emissions where direct electrification is not possible.

At Fortum, we have chosen a step-wise approach to hydrogen and we see hydrogen as an integral part of a future-proof energy system. Renewable electricity, together with nuclear power, provides the backbone for producing clean hydrogen through electrolysis. This hydrogen can then be used in heavy industry, long-haul transport, and energy storage, supporting both climate goals and energy security. Of course building a totally new industrial area takes some time, but first steps happen here and now. Our first concrete case is building a test facility in Kalla with two electrolysis technologies.

Growing Demand in Europe

The demand for clean hydrogen in Europe is expected to grow rapidly in the coming decade. Industries such as steel, chemicals, and refineries are already exploring hydrogen-based processes to replace fossil fuels. At the same time, international cooperation and infrastructure development – from pipelines to storage – are gaining momentum.

Fortum’s Role and the Power of Collaboration

Currently, our strategic focus is on executing small-scale projects that allow us to build expertise and validate our solutions within the evolving market landscape. As the regulatory and commercial environment matures, we are well-positioned to take a decision on scaling our operations and expand into larger, more complex initiatives.

The transition will not happen overnight. It requires investment, innovation, and collaboration between companies, governments, and communities. But one thing is clear: the hydrogen economy is not a question of if, but when. By acting now, we can ensure Europe remains at the forefront of clean technologies – creating jobs, competitiveness, and a sustainable future.

Looking Ahead

Hydrogen is more than an energy carrier. It is an opportunity to reshape industries, decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, and secure a resilient energy system for generations to come. We are actively exploring hydrogen concepts and business opportunities to offer our customers the best future solutions for their businesses.
