Based on the long-standing reliable and successful use of nuclear energy for power generation in Slovenia, preparations are underway for a decision to build a new nuclear power plant at Krško site (JEK2 project), near the operating Krško nuclear power plant. State-owned company GEN energija, developer of the JEK2 project, is considering solutions from the pool of pressurized water reactor technologies.

Since fall 2024, Fortum, together with its subcontractors TVO Nuclear Services, Posiva Solutions, and Elektroinštitut Milan Vidmar, has been supporting GEN energija in the preparation of the Site Safety Analysis Report for the new nuclear power plant at Krško site. The purpose of these documents is to describe the site and its surroundings, consider reactor technologies, and evaluate the mutual and joint impacts of the new and existing units on the environment. The documents will support JEK2 project Environmental Assessment and will also contribute to the National Spatial Plan process, which is progressing in parallel.
Significant progress has been made over several months in preparing the initial revisions of the deliverables by the summer. During its later stages, the documents will be supplemented based on feedback from spatial planning authorities and the upcoming Strategic Environmental Assessment, including cross-border consultations.
According to the GEN energija team collaboration with the Fortum team has a significant added value for the development of JEK2 project. “Fortum along with its team of experts has extensive experience with the spatial placement of nuclear facilities, preparation of safety analyses and also experience with the operation of multiple units at the same location, which is a strong and valuable set of knowledge.”
"Nuclear newbuild activity is accelerating in many countries across Europe. New nuclear projects require solid expertise from the outset to ensure they proceed according to plan. Fortum has unique experience and competencies as a nuclear owner and operator, with recent experience from new nuclear projects in Finland and Europe. We are pleased to contribute our knowledge to the development of new nuclear projects in Slovenia," says Jani Ikonen, Director of Newbuild, Nuclear Services at Fortum.
