Fortum has been accredited with the international Fair Tax Mark for the third year in a row. Fortum’s achieved score of the fair tax criteria has also improved as Fortum continues its commitment to responsible tax management. In 2023, Fortum was the first Finnish company to secure accreditation to the global gold standard of responsible tax conduct. The independent, third-party accreditation confirms Fortum’s long term commitment to responsible tax management, financial transparency, and following the spirit and letter of the law.
"We have continued with the annual Fair Tax Mark assessment because we believe in always developing and improving, not to score points, but to aim high in our responsible tax management. We are delighted to have an improved score. At Fortum, we have a long tradition of voluntary public tax reporting. Transparency is a core element of how we manage taxes—it is as essential as ensuring full regulatory compliance across our operations and paying the correct amount of tax at the right time, in the countries where we operate. By being open about our tax position, processes, and contributions, we aim to strengthen trust with our stakeholders and demonstrate our dedication to responsible tax management. This recognition is important and motivates us further on our path of continuous improvement," comments ReijoSalo, Vice President Tax, Fortum.
Fortum operates in the energy sector, characterized by long-term capital-intensive investments. The company aims to manage its taxes responsibly to ensure that its businesses can continue to invest, operate flexibly and efficiently, and safeguard returns to the shareholders and contributions to societies where Fortum has operations or creates value. For more than ten years, Fortum has been providing its stakeholders with a 'Tax Footprint' report, which contains lots of detailed information on the Group's taxes, with country-specific tax narratives and explanations.
“Fortum’s re‑certification with the Fair Tax Mark for the third consecutive year reflects their ongoing outstanding commitment to responsible tax conduct and tax transparency. We warmly congratulate them on this well-deserved achievement. Their annual Tax Footprint report continues to set a high bar for business the world over, combining robust country‑by‑country data disclosures with clear narrative explanations. They put real effort into explaining 'the why' as well as 'the what'. Equally commendable is Fortum’s desire to benchmark themselves against the very best out there, via the Tax Responsibility and Transparency Index, and to disclose their performance and continuous improvement. When Fortum were first certified, we noted that their tax transparency was among the best we had ever come across. It is great to see that, several years later, this is still the case, and they continue to be global leaders,” said Paul Monaghan, Chief Executive, Fair Tax Foundation.
The Fair Tax Mark accreditation scheme is the global gold standard of responsible tax conduct. It seeks to encourage and recognise organisations that pay the right amount of corporation tax at the right time and in the right place. Tax contributions are a vital part of the broader social and economic contribution made by businesses, helping the communities in which they operate to deliver valuable public services and build infrastructure that paves the way for growth. Accredited businesses include listed PLCs, co-operatives, social enterprises, and large private businesses.
