Lifecycle assessment confirms low‑carbon electricity production of Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant
5 March 2026 at 08:30 EET

As part of its continuous sustainability efforts, Fortum has commissioned a life cycle assessment (LCA) of nuclear power produced in Loviisa nuclear power plant. The results demonstrate that the carbon footprint of electricity produced over the lifecycle at Loviisa is at the same level or lower than electricity produced with other low-carbon and renewable energy generation methods1.
The findings reaffirm Loviisa’s significance in delivering reliable, low-carbon electricity and supporting the objectives of the Paris Agreement. The study, conducted by Etteplan Oy, concludes that carbon footprint of electricity produced at Loviisa is 6.08 g CO₂e/kWh. Electricity production based on nuclear power and renewable energy are crucial to Fortum’s ability to reach its SBTi validated science‑based emission‑reduction targets through the company’s climate transition plan.
The study was conducted in accordance with international LCA standards and evaluates the environmental impact of electricity generated at Loviisa from cradle to grave. This means the assessment covers the plant’s entire lifecycle, from initial construction to final decommissioning, along with upstream and downstream activities such as nuclear fuel supply, the electricity transmission network, and the safe disposal of spent fuel.
Unlike specific emissions, which account only for the operational phase of power generation, the cradle‑to‑grave LCA provides a holistic view of all emissions associated with the plant throughout its entire existence.

Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant
In 2025, the availability at Fortum’s fully-owned Loviisa nuclear power plant was 89.4%. In 2025, the power plant produced a total of 7.9 terawatt hours of electricity, which is approximately 10% of Finland’s electricity production. Fortum employs about 800 nuclear sector professionals, 570 of them work at the Loviisa power plant. Additionally, nearly 100 permanent employees of other companies work in the power plant area every day. More information: http://www.fortum.com/loviisa http://www.fortum.com/loviisa - External link
