Fortum’s CEO Markus Rauramo represents the power sector at a high-level Clean Industrial Deal event with Ursula von der Leyen in Antwerp

On 26 February, a year after the Antwerp Declaration launch, 400 business leaders, industry and worker representatives gathered in Antwerp where President Ursula von der Leyen introduced the EU Commission’s Clean Industrial Deal. Fortum’s President and CEO Markus Rauramo was invited to speak as the representative of the power sector at a round table to discuss the just-published legislative package with President von der Leyen.
“Europe needs a power industry that is committed to clean, reliable and competitively priced power supply, thereby supporting the decarbonisation of the European industry,” Markus Rauramo said in his comment at the round table. “We need a responsible power industry that supports the welfare of societies by driving clean electrification as the most cost-efficient way to achieve a net-zero economy and decarbonise our customers.”

Fortum joined the Antwerp Declaration in spring 2024, aligning with our commitment to help our industrial customers thrive and decarbonise their processes.
The Antwerp Declaration urges governments and EU bodies to adopt clear, predictable industrial policies to keep Europe competitive. Today, as Europe’s industries are facing historical challenges, the signatories of the Declaration are calling on EU Heads of State to take urgent action across all EU Member States without any delay.

In our view, the Commission has chosen the right approach in its milestone policy package published today. Energy-intensive industries and clean energy production must work together, with clean electrification at the core. This synergy is critical for Europe’s competitiveness, decarbonisation, and energy independence.
