FORTUM CORPORATION ONLINE NEWS 20 OCTOBER 2026
Fortum and Vireon have signed a sales agreement for renewable hydrogen. Vireon will purchase renewable hydrogen from Fortum’s 2 MW pilot facility Kalla Test Center. The produced hydrogen will be delivered to Vireon’s refuelling station in Utajärvi. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2026.
Fortum is committed to accelerating electrification across the Nordics, and the Kalla Test Center will contribute to that goal. Vireon’s refuelling station will be used in the EU co-funded H2Go project, led by the University of Oulu, as well as in the VISIOK project, which are both piloting the use of hydrogen-powered trucks in transport. Through these research projects, the agreement between Fortum and Vireon seeks to advance hydrogen-based heavy transport solutions and help accelerate the development of Finland's hydrogen economy. "It is great to welcome new customers for the hydrogen produced at Kalla Test Center and, through this cooperation, to concretely test and advance the role of hydrogen as a fuel for heavy-duty transport," says Satu Sipola, vice president of P2X & Project Execution at Fortum.
"Our cooperation with Fortum is an important step in bringing domestically produced renewable hydrogen into heavy-duty transport. From the very beginning, the cooperation with Fortum has been smooth and solution oriented. We have particularly appreciated their flexibility and willingness to work together to create a new market," adds Juho-Matti Uuksulainen, Project Director at Vireon.
Fortum is developing hydrogen solutions step by step, focusing on building technical and commercial capabilities. We are actively exploring concepts that combine our expertise in fossil-free power generation, district heating, flexibility services, and energy optimisation with hydrogen production. This enables us to tailor solutions to our customers’ needs.
