Fortum ranked as the Nordic leader in climate change mitigation In the report ‘Taking the Temperature' published today by Ethix SRI Advisors and Insight Investment, Fortum was ranked with a score 80/100 as the clear leader in the Nordic region in climate change mitigation. The new report assesses how the 40 largest companies in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden are responding to risks and opportunities presented by climate change. The average score of the Nordic companies was 37/100. Fortum's green house gas emissions are amongst the lowest of European power generators. In 2008, 92% of the electricity generated by Fortum in the EU was free of CO2 emissions. Fortum is the leading seller of eco-labelled electricity in the Nordic countries. "We have put a lot of effort into sustainability in the recent years and are very proud of the external recognitions that show that we are moving in the right direction. As an energy company, climate change mitigation is essential for our continued success. Emission reductions in our own operations, energy efficiency and other sustainable energy solutions are key elements on this journey," says Carola Teir-Lehtinen, Corporate Vice President, Sustainability. In the report "Taking the Temperature 2009 Nordic region" the 40 largest listed Nordic companies are evaluated on climate change governance frameworks, policies, risk assessment processes, green house gas inventories, historic emissions reduction performance and targets as well as implementation strategies, and contribution to wider climate change policy debates. The Swedish newspaper, Dagens Industri, wrote today that investors find corporate sustainability reporting in general insufficient. The paper states that Finnish companies are ahead in the sustainability reporting, followed by Sweden.
