25 October 2017, 10:00 EEST

Fortum has received a special award from the Global District Energy Climate Awards 2017 organisation for the expansion of its district heating and cooling (DHC) system in Tartu, Estonia. The expansion of the DHC system in Tartu has significantly decreased CO2 emissions and it also uses remarkably less electricity than alternative solutions.Over the years, the Tartu district heating and cooling system has undergone several changes and technology upgrades which have transformed it into a modern and efficient DHC system. The cooling plant is using river water and it's integrated with a district heating and solar power solution. The upgraded system emits 52% less CO2 and uses 70% less electricity than earlier solutions. This means that the system also requires 71% less primary resources. Both district heating and cooling networks are expected to continue growing as they are one of the main enablers of Tartu’s environmental strategy.

Margo Külaots, Head of DHC Estonia Fortum, comments: “We are really pleased and honored to receive the Award of Excellence in the Expansion category. This is a remarkable recognition to our brilliant colleagues, loyal customers and a supportive City municipality. Great things happen always in cooperation towards a common goal. Our goal has been a cleaner and sustainable Tartu. This award shows that our efforts have been successful and we will continue to make the Tartu DHC system even better.”The 2017 Global District Energy Climate Awards were distributed on 24 October in Doha, Qatar, during this year’s Euroheat & Power Congress. The Global District Energy Climate Awards aim to generate broader awareness, greater adoption and strengthen the importance of District Energy and the movement towards clean, sustainable energy solutions.
