The annual outage of Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant will begin with Unit 2 on Sunday, August 2nd, followed by the servicing of Unit 1. This year, Unit 2 will undergo the short annual outage, and Unit 1 the extensive inspection outage performed every eight years. The annual outages are estimated to last a total of about 69 days.
In addition to the normal periodic maintenance work and refuelling, tasks related to maintenance and continuous improvement will be carried out on both units during the annual outage. The periodic inspection carried out every eight years will be performed during Loviisa 1’s extensive annual outage; the inspection will cover, e.g., the reactor pressure vessel and its inner parts, and pressure tests will be performed on the primary and secondary circuit’s pressurised equipment and pipelines. In addition to the service work on the main generators, the stators of two generators will be replaced. Every year, one quarter of the fuel is replaced.
“The Loviisa power plant has taken many measures in preparation for and to prevent potential coronavirus infections. Among other things, we are prepared for a quarantine of up to 14 days for workers arriving from other countries prior to the start of the work, and we will stagger the arrival to the power plant between the various work teams,” says Loviisa power plant’s Deputy Director Thomas Buddas.
In addition to the power plant’s 500 employees, nearly 900 external workers will participate in the annual outage. Some 75 per cent of the workers are Finns. Additionally, there will be workers from France, Poland, Germany, Russia and Czech Republic.
