Satu Katajala, Fortum's Director for Nuclear Safety, has been appointed Director of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Paris Centre as of 1 January 2024. Ms Katajala is the first woman to head a WANO regional centre in the history of the organisation founded in 1989.

Satu Katajala has over 30 years of experience in the nuclear industry. She has worked in e.g. radiation protection at TVO’s Olkiluoto and Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant and as Head of the Safety Unit and later as Power Plant Director at Loviisa in 2009 – 2022. In addition, she has been a board member of Posiva, the global leader in final disposal of spent nuclear fuel, from 2016 to 2022. Ms Katajala holds a Master of Science (Tech.) degree from LUT University in Finland.

“I am very honoured to be appointed to one of the most interesting positions in the nuclear industry. Advancing nuclear safety is in the heart of WANOs operations. On an international scale nuclear safety in Finland has always been very good and our knowhow is widely recognised. Sharing of best practises and our approach to nuclear safety culture is a great privilege to me,” Satu Katajala says.

“I am delighted that Satu has joined us and I’ve no doubt she will be a great asset to WANO, to our members of the Paris Centre region, and the global industry. Satu joins us with a raft of experience and expertise, and we look forward to her leading Paris Centre during a key phase in its development – with our shared aim to support our members in driving sustainable improvements to all plants and facilities. As the first female appointed to the position, this is also a major step in helping enhance diversity within our industry,” Dr Naoki Chigusa, WANO Chief Executive Officer, comments.

WANO is the international association of commercial nuclear power plant owners and operators, with a mission to maximise the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants and facilities worldwide. The organisation was established in 1989 to strengthen the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants through cooperation between nuclear operators. WANO has more than 120 member organisations that own and operate around 430 nuclear power plant units in over 30 countries and areas globally.

WANO Paris Centre comprises some 70 nuclear power plant units from 17 countries. In addition to Paris, the organisation has regional centres in Atlanta, Moscow and Tokyo and offices in London and Shanghai.
