Loviisa nuclear power plant annual outage to begin 17.8.2025

The annual outage of Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant will begin with Unit 2 on Sunday, August 17th, followed by the servicing of Unit 1. Both units will undergo the short annual outage, and they are expected to last a total of 38 days.

During the annual outages, a quarter of the fuel will be replaced. In addition to fuel replacement, several preventive maintenance, servicing, and inspection tasks will be carried out to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the power plant in the coming years.

”Annual maintenance outages support the life cycle management of the power plant. Regular maintenance enables the plant to be operated reliably during the next operating period. In addition, selected components are systematically renewed, allowing the plant to operate until the end of new operating licenses,” says Sasu Valkamo, Senior Vice President of Loviisa power plant.

The Loviisa power plant maintains a high safety culture, and ensuring the safety of the plant and its employees is also the priority in annual outages. Every annual outage has a specific safety theme, and a great deal of attention is paid to work safety.

A total of 1,420 people working on the annual outages

The Loviisa power plant employs approximately 570 permanent employees and 100 employees of contractors. In addition to these permanent employees, some 100 summer trainees and other temporary employees as well as approximately 650 employees of external contractors will participate in the annual outages.

Many of the employees coming from other parts of Finland and abroad will stay in the power plant’s accommodation village. This year, those arriving for the annual outages will be able to stay in the new accommodation buildings for the first time.

”Renovation of the accommodation village is part of the major investment programme at the Loviisa power plant to extend the plant’s operating lifetime to the end of 2050,” notes Valkamo.

The related investments are estimated to reach approximately one billion euros by 2050. Over the past five years, Fortum has already invested approximately 200 million euros in the Loviisa power plant.
