Fortum has funded the construction of a solar power plant for the local water utility in the city of Ananiv (Odesa region) through the Solar Aid for Ukraine programme. The installation is now fully operational, helping to secure the continuous supply of clean water to the city’s 8,000 residents, including during possible power outages.
The Solar Aid for Ukraine programme is run by the Ukrainian environmental NGO Ecoclub. Through the initiative, Fortum aims to support local municipalities by improving access to reliable, renewable electricity for critical public services such as water provision. The solar plant in Ananiv is designed to strengthen resilience and ensure essential services can continue even in emergency situations.
“Our employees have been passionate about supporting Ukraine, so contributing to this project felt natural for us. As Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continues to face attacks, solutions that keep critical services running are vital. This solar plant will strengthen the community's resilience today and in the future. We at Fortum are proud to support Ukraine in this important work,” says Nebahat Albayrak, EVP Sustainability and Corporate Relations at Fortum.
“In today’s reality, this is a priceless contribution to our community. The daily shelling of energy infrastructure in the Odesa region leads to citizens being unable to receive the basic services that are normal for the average resident - such as electricity, water, and heat. Thanks to this project, we now have hope for future stability in the water supply sector,” says Viktor Pokotilo, Deputy Mayor for the activities of the council's executive bodies.
“Support from international companies today makes it possible to implement solutions that would otherwise be out of reach for communities. We are grateful to Fortum for joining the Solar Aid for Ukraine initiative and becoming part of systemic change in the field of energy sustainability. Such partnerships demonstrate that joining forces around practical solutions can have a long-term impact on Ukraine’s recovery,” Olena Kondratiuk, Project manager at NGO Ecoclub.
The donation is part of Fortum’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, through which the company supports initiatives that benefit both people and the environment. The CSR Programme focuses on climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity, water, equality, education, and humanitarian relief.
By supporting the local water utility with its own clean-energy generation capacity, Fortum helps reduce vulnerability to grid disturbances and enhances the security of water supply for the community. The solar plant will contribute to safeguarding basic services for the residents of Ananiv today and in the future.
