Fortum has submitted permit applications to the Swedish Land and Environment Court for two pumped hydro storage projects as part of its ongoing feasibility study to explore prerequisites for new pumped hydro storage plants in Sweden. The objectives of the feasibility study are in line with Fortum’s strategy to advance electrification in the Nordics by providing reliable energy and driving decarbonisation in industries.
The two projects under assessment in Bastvålen in Värmland County and Lekstjärnen in Dalarna County have a combined installed capacity of approximately 864 MW (514 MW and 350 MW respectively). A granted permit is a prerequisite for continued project development and for potential future investment decisions. No investment decisions have been made at this stage.
Pumped hydro storage complements existing power system by providing long-duration storage and essential system balancing services. As a proven large‑scale technology it enhances security of supply, system flexibility and operational resilience by storing electricity during periods of surplus and supplying it during peak demand, while supporting reliable power deliveries and higher integration of renewable generation.
“Pumped hydro storage provides large‑scale, long‑duration flexibility that is essential for a resilient and reliable power system. Submitting these permit applications is an important milestone in assessing the feasibility of projects with clear system value,” says Mikael Lemström, Head of Hydro Power at Fortum.
Fortum’s ongoing feasibility study examines commercial, technological, environmental and regulatory conditions for new pumped hydro storage plants in Sweden. By advancing the feasibility study and permitting for pumped hydro storage, Fortum aims to strengthen preparedness for the next phase of electrification, supporting reliable power supply and sustainable growth across its core markets.
