Smarter, faster and better looking – the creation of the Fortum's new global app

How do you take the best of four worlds and create a unified platform that is smarter, faster, and sleeker? The team behind Fortum's new global app knows the answer.

Fortum, which previously consisted of several different brands, has now chosen to consolidate its entire operation under one roof – Fortum. This also applies to the company's digital world. Four apps in three different countries have merged into one.

"We went from four different apps with old technology and a high need for maintenance to a common Nordic platform built on modern technology with great potential for further development. It has been an exciting and demanding journey, but now the real fun begins – developing new features together with our customers. Soon, for example, it will be possible to control heating and air conditioning via the app. We are also looking into how we can adapt to the upcoming transition from hourly to 15 minutes pricing for electricity," says Johannes Holmertz, who led the work on the new app.

The energy industry is constantly changing, driven by both regulatory requirements and the complexity of the electricity system as a whole. But electricity customers have also become increasingly interested in electricity and how they can influence their electricity bills. Continuously developing and improving digital services is high on Fortum's agenda, and expectations are high.

"Working closely with the business and customers is what makes this job really fun. We are in close dialogue with business owners, customer service and IT as well as billing and security. Being part of an industry that is of great importance to customers and society at large feels rewarding and meaningful. It is clear that digital development is a high priority in the organization, many people are asking for our expertise and see great value in the app. Electricity is a fairly generic commodity; it is how we package it that makes a difference for customers."

The basic functionality of the app is now built, and with the strength of being a global team driving development together, there are great opportunities to take the app to the next level and create something that really stands out.

"It is a really exciting stage to join, and if you also like working together in a global team with a great spirit of experimentation and openness, you have come to the right place."

Fortum's Global App:

  •  The tech stack for the app includes TypeScript, React Native, GraphQL, and Azure infrastructure.
  • The team works from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Poland, where Fortum also operates. Fortum also runs a challenger brand, Nordy, in Spain.
