Advancing Sweden’s nuclear future with proven experience

15 October 2026

Fortum’s Nuclear Services supports customers with practical owner-operator experience. Jörgen Finne, our Sales Manager in Sweden, explains how Fortum can support the Swedish nuclear industry, where new nuclear development and nuclear power plant lifetime extensions are highly topical.

Jörgen, what kinds of nuclear services and expertise does Fortum offer in Sweden?

“Our offering in Sweden is the same as in our other markets. Our expertise is built on nearly 50 years of owning and operating the Loviisa nuclear power plant, combined with insights gained from a wide range of assignments for customers across the nuclear industry. This enables us to support customers throughout the entire lifecycle of a nuclear facility, from new-build studies and operational support to decommissioning, radioactive waste management and final disposal. Our aim is to make this expertise available beyond our own operations and offer customers the unique perspective of an operator.”

Where do you see the greatest opportunities for Fortum to support Swedish nuclear power companies in today’s operating environment?

“The Swedish nuclear industry is entering a new and exciting phase. Plans for new nuclear power are progressing and gaining momentum. As of early October 2026, seven applications for state aid for new-build projects had been submitted in Sweden. At the same time, existing operators are exploring how their plants can continue to deliver reliable electricity for decades to come. This creates strong demand for practical nuclear experience, and that is where we believe Fortum can make a real difference. We have participated in new-build projects in Finland and abroad, extended the operating lifetime of the Loviisa nuclear power plant twice, and are now implementing a major investment programme to support operations until 2050. In addition to our own Loviisa project, we support several LTO projects across Europe. Whether the need relates to new build, long-term operation, waste management or decommissioning, our ambition is to help customers make informed decisions and reduce project risk.”

What makes Fortum a trusted partner for Sweden’s nuclear industry?

“What I think sets Fortum apart is that we are not only a service provider but also an owner, licensee and operator. We have faced many of the same challenges that our customers are addressing today. This gives us a practical owner’s perspective that goes beyond theory. We understand the realities of operating nuclear facilities, extending plant lifetimes, modernising ageing assets, managing radioactive waste and preparing for future nuclear projects because we have done it ourselves. For me, being a trusted partner is about sharing that experience. We work alongside our customers as a peer utility, combining specialist expertise with lessons learned from real nuclear operations to help them make informed decisions and reduce risk throughout the lifecycle of their facilities. We also have first-hand experience of Sweden’s nuclear industry through our co-ownership of the Forsmark and Oskarshamn nuclear power plants.”

How do you serve customers in Sweden in practice? Do you rely on experts from Finland, local resources, or a combination of both?

“Fortum has around 800 nuclear experts in Finland, with about 570 based at the Loviisa nuclear power plant and the remainder supporting our nuclear business from our headquarters in Espoo. Fortum also has a well-established presence in Sweden, with more than 550 employees and its Swedish headquarters in Solna. We currently have around 15 employees working in nuclear-related roles in Sweden, providing a local presence in the market. In practice, our project teams are tailored to each assignment. Depending on the customer’s needs, we combine local Swedish resources with specialist expertise from Finland. Where appropriate, we also complement our teams with capabilities from our trusted partner network. This approach provides both proximity to the customer and access to highly experienced subject-matter experts across a wide range of nuclear disciplines.”

Can you highlight some of the projects Fortum has delivered for Sweden’s nuclear industry?

“One example of Fortum’s footprint in the Swedish nuclear industry is Apros®, our advanced process simulation software. Apros is used to model and analyse the behaviour of nuclear power plants under both normal operating conditions and various transient and accident scenarios. The software supports activities such as safety analysis, operator training, plant modifications, new build and long-term operation programmes. Today, all Swedish nuclear power plants use Apros in different areas of their operations. Beyond Apros, we have supported Swedish nuclear operators and organisations with our waste management expertise. For example, we have delivered our NURES® ion exchange technology for treating radioactive liquid waste to Studsvik.”

Meet us at Kärnteknikdagarna, the Swedish Conference on Nuclear Power, on 24–25 November 2026 at the Radisson Blu Arlandia in Stockholm-Arlanda. We look forward to meeting customers, partners and industry colleagues and discussing how the lessons we have learned can help address the challenges ahead.
