Fortum, Arcadis and KH Engineering to support Belgoprocess in the safe processing of radioactive waste
Fortum joins Arcadis and KH Engineering in a multidisciplinary consortium that will provide engineering and technical support services to Belgoprocess, Belgium’s organization responsible for the processing of radioactive waste and the dismantling of decommissioned nuclear installations in Dessel. The consortium’s work will be carried out under a six-year framework agreement valued at EUR 10 million.

The consortium will support Belgoprocess in addressing complex engineering challenges related to the safe processing, storage and handling of radioactive waste. Fortum will contribute its expertise in nuclear technology, radiation safety and waste management, drawing on decades of experience from the nuclear energy sector as the owner and operator of the Loviisa nuclear power plant.
Focus on nuclear waste and radiation safety
Through this collaboration, Belgoprocess strengthens its access to specialized expertise in areas critical to nuclear safety. Fortum’s contribution will focus in particular on radiation protection, nuclear safety principles, waste treatment processes and regulatory compliance, supporting both radioactive and non‑radioactive installations on site.
The consortium provides a broad range of engineering disciplines, including e.g. civil and mechanical engineering, automation, instrumentation and HVAC, ensuring a comprehensive and integrated approach to project delivery.
Integrated collaboration
Within the consortium, Fortum will provide specialist input where nuclear and radiation safety expertise is required, while Arcadis coordinates the overall engineering activities together with KH Engineering. The combination of on‑site support and remote expert services enables efficient use of resources while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
The partnership is built on close cooperation, transparency and a shared commitment to safety. Over the next six years, the consortium will support Belgoprocess in the safe and responsible management of radioactive waste, contributing to long‑term environmental protection and sustainable solutions for the nuclear sector in Belgium.
