Frequently asked questions about the Fortum Smart Charging service

In simple terms, charging is shifted from hours with higher electricity prices to hours with lower prices.

The savings depend on several factors, the two most important being the price of electricity and the charging power. If you have a more powerful home charger, such as a 22 kW unit, you can shift a larger portion of the charging to cheaper hours thanks to the higher charging capacity.

When planning Smart Charging, we take into account when you want the car to be fully charged (a typical time is, for example, 08:00). You can also set the desired end time for charging in advance in the app.

You can find Fortum Smart Charging in the Fortum app.

Download the app from your app store:

The data collected by the app depends on your car brand. When Fortum Smart Charging connects to your car, we gain access to the data that the car manufacturer has made available through its API (application programming interface).

Smart Charging uses specific data points to function properly.

Data we use via the car manufacturer's API:

  • Car location, to verify that the vehicle is at the user-defined Smart Charging location

  • Charging status (%)

  • Battery capacity (kWh)

  • Charging speed of the car and the home charger

Data collected from Fortum’s database:

  • User-defined departure time

  • Minimum battery level for Smart Charging (%)

  • Electricity price

  • Locations defined for Smart Charging

By combining this information, Smart Charging can create the most accurate possible charging schedule.

Fortum Charge & Drive is a convenient and flexible solution for electric vehicle drivers on the road who use public charging stations. With Fortum Charge & Drive, you get access to the entire Recharge charging network, which includes around 38,000 charging points across the Nordics.

Using the Charge & Drive app, you can easily start and stop charging, and view your payment and charging history. You don’t need to be a Fortum customer to use the Charge & Drive service — it’s open to everyone.
