The origin of the electricity in all electricity contracts sold by Fortum to consumer customers is verified with Guarantees of Origin. We purchase Guarantees of Origin for renewable energy and nuclear power corresponding to your electricity consumption.

Fortum supports the John Nurminen Foundation

Fortum supports the work of the John Nurminen Foundation by donating €5 for every 100% Solar Energy additional service agreement.

The John Nurminen Foundation implements concrete measures to improve the condition of the Baltic Sea and helps preserve its maritime heritage for future generations. Through its projects, the Foundation reduces the environmental pressures on the Baltic Sea and helps reduce environmental risks.

Work guided by measurable results and impact

The John Nurminen Foundation has been working to protect the Baltic Sea for more than 15 years and has launched dozens of Clean Baltic Sea projects during that time.

Its ongoing projects reduce nutrient emissions that contribute to eutrophication by reducing point-source pollution from municipal wastewater treatment plants and industry, as well as diffuse pollution from agriculture through a range of water protection measures. The Foundation also works to reduce internal nutrient loading already present in the Baltic Sea, for example through fisheries management, and explores new methods to further reduce internal loading.

In addition, the Foundation actively follows up on completed wastewater treatment projects in Russia, Belarus and Poland, where it has participated as a funder or implementation partner.

The John Nurminen Foundation is also an award-winning producer of maritime cultural content and a promoter of knowledge about the Baltic Sea. The Foundation has published more than 40 books about the sea and organised numerous Baltic Sea-themed exhibitions and events. By sharing knowledge about the Baltic Sea and its history, the Foundation helps increase understanding of why this unique sea needs to be protected.

The additional service means that we purchase a quantity of solar guarantees of origin corresponding to your consumption, meaning that the electricity is produced 100% by solar power. The origin of the solar electricity is verified in accordance with the European Guarantee of Origin system.

When you choose the renewable electricity add-on service for your electricity contract, we purchase a quantity of renewable energy guarantees of origin from electricity producers corresponding to your consumption. The origin of renewable energy is verified using the European Guarantee of Origin system.

Prices for guarantees of origin are determined by supply and demand. For example, the amount of rainfall affects the production and thus the availability of hydropower, and the demand for hydropower determines the price of a hydropower guarantee of origin.

When you choose the 100% Renewable Energy additional service for your electricity contract, we purchase Guarantees of Origin for renewable energy from electricity producers corresponding to your electricity consumption. The origin of the renewable energy is verified through the European Guarantees of Origin system. A Guarantee of Origin certifies that the electricity has been generated from renewable energy sources.

Due to the rising cost of renewable energy Guarantees of Origin, we are updating the price of the service to reflect these procurement costs. The cost of acquiring Guarantees of Origin has increased significantly in recent years, particularly in recent months, as demand has grown faster than supply. Since Guarantees of Origin are purchased based on electricity consumption, we are updating the service pricing to reflect customers' electricity consumption.

Renewable energy guarantees of origin are purchased based on electricity consumption, and therefore we are updating the pricing of services to reflect consumption.

Due to the increase in the price of renewable energy guarantees of origin, we are updating the price of the service to reflect the acquisition costs. The acquisition cost of guarantees of origin has increased significantly in recent years and especially in recent months, as their demand has grown faster than production.

The monthly fee will remain the same for 100% renewable energy and will decrease for 100% solar energy, covering the acquisition costs of guarantees of origin. The price of the service will consist of a small consumption-based c/kWh fee in addition to the monthly fee. Renewable energy guarantees of origin are purchased according to electricity consumption, and therefore we are updating the pricing of the services to reflect consumption.
