Fixed-Price Electricity Contract – Questions and Answers

A fixed electricity price means that you pay a fixed price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) throughout the contract period, regardless of what happens in the electricity market. With the Fortum Kesto electricity contract, you can lock in the price per kilowatt-hour for one month at a time, and with the Fortum Duo electricity contract, for two years. During this period, you know exactly how much you will pay per kilowatt-hour of electricity you use.

If you choose a fixed-price electricity contract, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that the electricity price remains the same regardless of market fluctuations. However, this does not mean that you will pay the same amount every month, as your total cost depends on your electricity consumption. You will, however, know exactly how much you pay per kilowatt-hour.

A fixed electricity price is based on market expectations of future spot prices.

Benefits of a fixed price:

  • You know exactly how much you pay per consumed kilowatt-hour.

  • You are protected against sudden price fluctuations.

A fixed-price electricity contract is a good choice for customers who value predictability. If you want to avoid potential electricity price increases during the winter months, when electricity is often more expensive, you may choose a fixed-price contract. Your electricity price will remain the same throughout the entire contract period.

A spot priced electricity contract follows the price development of the electricity market. If you have a spot priced electricity contract, your electricity bill will vary monthly depending on rises and falls in the electricity price. A fixed-price electricity contract, on the other hand, means that the price per kilowatt-hour remains the same throughout the contract period. If you choose a spot priced electricity contract, you pay for electricity based on the exact price at the time the electricity is used.
